Commissioner Dave Gilmour to Speak to Central Committee
Thursday, Aug. 26, 6:30 p.m.

Special location: JCD HQ

Dr. Dave Gilmour will review his very successful two terms as Jackson County commissioner at our JCD Central Committee meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, August 26, at JCD Headquarters, 40 S. Central Ave., Medford.

Despite the fact that Republicans have outnumbered Democrats for many years in our county, Dr. Gilmour managed to win two county-wide elections for commissioner, making him one of the most successful Democrats in our area along with state Sen. Alan Bates and Rep. Peter Buckley.

After serving for several years as our County Health Officer, Dr. Gilmour was elected commissioner in 2002 and won re-election in 2006. For all these years he has been the commissioner who cared the most about the environment, land use planning, health care and other aspects of county government to which the Republicans on the board give short shrift.

Dave's term will be up in January and he decided not to run for re-election and is hoping that both Mark Wisnovsky, who is running for Dave's Position 3 on the board, and Jeff Golden, running for Position 1, will defeat their GOP opponents and continue the work he has been doing.

Dave will discuss the reasons he declined to take the large pay raise that the other commissioners voted themselves, the removal of Gold Ray Dam and many other issues and he will take your questions.

If you are a Precinct Committee Person, please attend this meeting because you are a voting member and you help decide the direction of our party. Note that we are meeting at our Headquarters and not at OEA this month only because the OEA room was not available.

For more information, call HQ at 541-858-1050.

New JCD Treasurer Needed Soon

Anna Dale Williamson may not be well known to many of you, but she may be the single most important officer of the Jackson County Democratic Party. Anna Dale will be retiring as our Treasurer at the end of the year and she would like to train anyone interested in the post before she leaves office. If you or someone you know would like to be our new Treasurer, please call JCDP Chair Allen Hallmark at 541-855-2312 or email him at chair@jcdemocrats.org.

The job requires basic bookkeeping skills and attention to detail and dedication. Please let Allen know if you know someone who could fit the bill.

Calling all Buck Eichler Supporters

As most of you know, Buck Eichler fought the good fight in the three-way race for Jackson County Commissioner, Position 3, in the May primary election that was won by Mark Wisnovsky.

What many people don't know was that Buck had already begun to suffer the effects of a rare medical condition in the last weeks of the campaign, which was finally diagnosed as a severe allergy to a bird he had rescued, a condition called “bird fancier’s lung." Now that he has found a new home for the bird and is having his house professionally cleaned to rid it of all bird allergens, his health is slowly returning.

Because of this health problem and the local economy, Buck has encountered financial setbacks that are making it difficult for him to retire all of the debts incurred by his campaign. Some indebtedness has been retired, and some friends have been able to forgive or reduce campaign loan amounts which have brought the campaign debt down to approximately $1,400.

That's where those of you who supported Buck's campaign come in. Please come to his rescue by sending a check for $25, $50, $100 or more today to the Friends of Buck Eichler Campaign, 505 S. Grape St., Medford, OR 97501. Buck thanks you and the Jackson County Democrats thank you too.

Third Friday Art Walk at the JCD HQ another Success

Urban Kohler, an actor and musician who teaches courses on currency at SOU-OLLI, entertained close to 30 participants in this past Friday’s Art Walk in Medford with his guitar playing and singing.

Featured political satirical artist, Catie Faryl, showed a great variety of her drawings, and also shared her famous "Balance Art Card" decks. Catie generously donated the money she raised in selling the deck toward deferring Buck Eichler's campaign expenses.

Many thanks to Urban, Catie, Carol Pettit, Gail Beason and Eliza & Brad Kauder for organizing and ‘staffing’ the event.

OPPORTUNITIES TO SUPPORT LOCAL DEMOCRATS IN THE NOVEMBER ELECTION

There’s no magic in getting Democrats elected. It’s an uphill battle, and it takes dedicated volunteers helping to “get the word out” about our superior candidates. The election is less than three months away, and your time and energy are needed. Don’t assume someone else is making the phone calls, knocking on doors or planting lawn signs. Please read about the opportunities to support local Democrats … call the coordinator and/or the JCD headquarters … make a difference now and in November!
