Strategy Session, “Winning Health Care for All in 2009- Yes, We Can!” 01/08/09

Now I know that at this moment, when we stand in the midst of a serious economic crisis, some might ask how we can afford

to focus on health care. …the question isn’t how we can afford to focus on health care- but how we can afford not to.

Because in order to fix our economic crisis, and rebuild our middle class, we need to fix our health care system too.

(From speech given by President-elect Barack Obama on October 4, 2008)

Dear Friends, We would like to invite you to a strategy session, “Winning Health Care for All in 2009- Yes, We Can!”

The session will be on Thursday, January 8, 2009 from 7- 8:30 PM at the Talent Public Library, 101 Home Street.

2009 is our opportunity in Oregon and nationally to win a guarantee of quality, affordable health care for everyone.  The State Legislature

will be working on the Healthy Oregon Act and the Oregon Health Fund Board’s recommendations to make sure every Oregonian has

quality, affordable health care. At the national level, President-elect Obama has repeated his election pledges to provide affordable,

accessible health insurance for every American. In his first post-election press conference on November 7th, he said, “We can’t afford

to wait on moving forward on the key priorities I identified during the campaign, including clean energy, healthcare, education and tax

relief for middle-class families.” But it’s up to us. In order to win health care for all in 2009, we need to have the voices of our organizations

and members heard. This meeting will be convened by State Representative Peter Buckley and include asessments from State Senator

Alan Bates, MD, the author of the Healthy Oregon Act, and a speaker on the process we expect in Congress. This session is an

opportunity for the leadership of our organizations to strategize, share ideas and make sure we are prepared for demanding legislative

campaigns at the state and federal levels.  We hope you and your leadership can join us on January 8th.
