Communications Committee Mission & Directives

Communications Committee Mission & Directives
Brief:
Communications Committee Mission Statement:  The Mission of the Communications Committee is to practice and promote truthful, trustworthy, proactive communication with the purpose of improving ‘the art of living together’1  in Jackson County and the greater community.   All communications will adhere to the tenets of the 2008 Jackson County Democratic Platform.
Directive:  The Communications Committee oversees the internal communications of the JCDCC including publication of the newsletter, announcements to the email list server, the content of the website and all other publications for party operations and development.
Premise:Two non exempt primary elements of proactive communication are trust and truth.  Simply put, a person or organization is as good as their word.
Regarding trust:
In short, everything that we do or say must engender confidence in the JCDP. Integrity must be the motive for our being and actions. That integrity has to be founded on principals of proven truth.
Regarding truth:
Truth requires empirically evaluated unbiased facts. Truth must not be substituted by ‘that which is manifest or assumed’. 2

Based on this premise, any communication crafted verbally or written must have the following established to uphold these premise values:
  • Accuracy: corrected for error.
  • Consistency:  true to the character of the JCDP platform principles and by laws.
  • Hope:  dependence on something future or contingent, that our message is one of positive encouragement as we look to the future.  This hope, expressed for any topic, must be based on substance rather than wishful thinking or emotional delusion. If we follow this premise, we will communicate well.

Practical:  Our committee will provide support services to all other committees for media needs.  Media includes web site, online data structures and forms, Lyris (subscription email announcements), print, and video.  Content for media will need to be submitted in a timely fashion to allow time for approval and production.  Requests, submissions and or questions regarding media and production services will be responded to by the Communications Chair unless directed elsewhere by said. Final decisions for content approval reside with the Chair and Vice Chair of the JCDP.  All costs for out sourced services need approval by Chair or Vice Chair, which will need to be submitted directly by Chair or Vice Chair to the Budget/Finance Chair.

Goals:  Create opportunities for proactive interaction between the JCDP and the local and greater community, especially as to how we can serve individual rights and the greater good as defined in our JCDP Platform.  This is intentionally an open ended goal as the needs of the community change.  We need to be problem solvers as to how best serve those needs through effective communication.

Message to Communication Committee members:  Our purpose as members is to provide ideas, talents, and skills in maintenance of our practical ongoing media needs and communication goals.  Integrity is the key element of all that we do, individually or collectively.  We are a diverse team and will work synergistically together in ‘think tank’ or individual fashion to get the best ideas we can.  Deferment will always be made to the final decisions of the Chair and Vice Chair of the JCDP as our appointed leaders.   Diplomacy and seeking to understand another person’s point of view from their perspective are important skills.  We need to transcend our own ideas of culture and other ideologies so that we are able to communicate effectively with others.  We need to engage others in a positive manner to derive a mutual benefit, especially with those who define themselves very differently from ourselves, especially if we disagree with them.  If we can find mutual ground, then we can work positively together to solve problems.

True communication is about building respectful, caring relationships.  We must always remember that we are ambassadors and representatives of the JCDP .  The wonderful part is that we as communicators have the skills, tools, and the help of each other to help solve the issues that the JCDP addresses, and thereby create a positive tomorrow.

Thank you for being a member of the Communications Committee, you are greatly appreciated,
