GOLDEN RULES: LETTERS to the EDITOR (LTE)

Keep it short. Stay within the word limits of each newspaper.

Keep it simple. Use clear declarative sentences to state your case.

Address only one topic per letter, and use your own words – humor, if appropriate, helps.

Be polite when responding to either news commentary or other LTEs.

Include your phone number and address for verification.

One letter per person every 30 days (counting from receipt at the paper).

Papers will generally not print thank-you letters that simply list people, that raise questions of good taste or libel, or attack an individual or group. Nor will they print those with gramatical errors that require re-writing, are not of topical interest, are annonymous or illegible. They will refuse letters that cover the same material you wrote previously, or evangelize (including biblical quotes), or contain factual errors.
