LOBBYING BY TELEPHONE
When the legislure is in session you can call your legislators in Salem. Go to our website – http://www.jcdemocrats.org/node/41 for their addresses, phone #s and fax #s.
-
Identify yourself by name and address.
-
Identify the bill you want to talk about by name and number.
-
Briefly state what your position is and how you would like your legislator to vote.
-
Ask your legislator’s view on the bill or issue; ask for a commitment to vote for your position. Don’t argue if the legislator takes a position against you or is unwilling to take a stand. Do not be abusive and do not threaten your legislator.
-
If the legislature is in session, your legislator is probably on the chamber floor or in a committee hearing, so when talking to a legislative aide or secretary follow the procedures suggested above. Staff people are very reliable and will tell the legislator that you called and what you said
-
If your legislator asks for further information, supply it as quickly as possible. The legislature moves rapidly during the session.
-
Follow up the call with a note thanking them for their time. Use the note as an opportunity to briefly restate your position.
