Oregonians will soon have increased food benefits under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which calls for a more than 13 percent increase in federal food stamp benefits.

Governor Ted Kulongoski says the increase helps in two ways. The added benefits will help people who are feeling the impact of the economy and also help local communities by putting more money into the local economy.

Tuition waivers for orphans, widows of veterans finds support in Oregon Senate

SB 595 expands on 2008 program to expand access to Oregon’s public universities.

SALEM – Legislation to expand the pool of persons qualified for tuition waivers at Oregon’s public universities passed the Senate this morning. Senate Bill 595 will allow survivors of servicemen and servicewomen killed or 100 percent disabled in combat to apply for open seats in courses at Oregon’s seven public universities and Oregon Health and Sciences University.

“This is a small thing we can do to honor the sacrifice of families of Oregon veterans,” said Sen. Mark Hass (D-Beaverton), chair of the Senate Education and General Government Committee. “We began this commitment in 2008 and I’m proud to see us expand this program.”  Full Article

Please read Alberto Enriguez’s important article about Oregon House Bill 2009, This bill contains important health care reforms for Oregonians, including full funding for the legislation, and comprehensive health care for everyone.

"HEALTH CARE!" the crowd roared.  "NOW!"

All of us were there for a Health Care Action Day mobilization in support of the landmark legislation now making its way through the House.  We heard the poignant testimony of  "Judith," a working mother and small business owner, who had reached the end of her six months' of  appeals.  Her pituitary had been destroyed when she lost nearly all her blood in childbirth.  It now takes a bag full of medicines to keep her alive every month.  And under current law, she will soon be without them.  The alternative?  The state has suggested she apply for disability.

"But I'm NOT disabled," she said.  "I have my own small business. I want to work!"

HB 2009 contains numerous fundamental health care reforms including an "everybody in, nobody out" provision that will ensure no Oregonian is without comprehensive health care.  If you have a private plan, you may keep it.  Or you may choose to participate in a new public plan which will be affordable to all (small business owners like Judith included!) on a sliding scale.  Read More...
