Democrats Vote Unanimously to Assist Unemployed Oregonians 04/14/09

SB 462, passed by the House today, will help over 6,000 out-of-work Oregonians

SALEM – House Democrats voted unanimously to pass SB 462 today, which would help over 6,000 Oregonians qualify for unemployment benefits. With unemployment now above 12% statewide, House Democrats have made assisting those unable to find work a top priority.

“Without exaggeration, this bill is critical for thousands of Oregon families to pay the bills and put food on the table,” said Representative David Edwards (D-Hillsboro), who carried the bill on the House floor.

Some workers losing their jobs during this economic crisis are not receiving unemployment benefits, even though their employers paid unemployment taxes for them, because of a flaw in the current system. SB 462 would fix that flaw and make the state of Oregon eligible for $91 million in federal funds under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which could then be used to provide benefits.

“People are really hurting right now,” said Representative Betty Komp (D-Woodburn). “It is our responsibility to provide as much help as we can. This bill will make a difference for thousands of Oregonians.”

House Democrats are dedicated to creating and preserving jobs, protecting families facing tough times and preparing for a brighter future. These plans are outlined in House Democrats’ Job Creation and Family Support Plan.
