State House Democrats Vote for Increased Privacy Protections (Posted 04/14/09)

HB 2371 would restrict exchanging electronic information gathered through data harvesting

SALEM - House Democrats today passed HB 2371, which increases privacy protections for Oregonians. The bill, carried on the floor by Representative Jean Cowan (D-Newport), would restrict exchanging electronic information gathered through data harvesting.

"The purpose of this bill is to prevent data harvesting from our state issued driver's licenses and identification cards," said Cowan. "There is a fear that information gathered in this way might be used for purposes not approved by consumers."  Information is electronically collected from state-issued driver's licenses, permits and identification cards for a variety of purposes.   2371 limits the conditions under which information may be exchanged to only those necessary to determine age, prevent fraud or ensure public safety - this information could not be sold for marketing purposes.  "This is an important step to continue to protect the privacy of Oregonians," said Representative Brent Barton (D-Clackamas). House Democrats are committed to helping Oregon's families by strengthening privacy protections and protecting them from fraud.
