Hello
Following is Dana Hepper's weekly update.
Stand members were speaking out last week, at all three Medford school budget meetings, and the Ways and Means Hearing in Ashland on Thursday night. Thanks to all who participated, as well as those who came out and helped canvass over the weekend for the School Board races. Lots of good press last week in the MMT. Sunday's article was very in depth, and for some reason, not posted on the web site in its entirety, so try to get a copy of yesterday's newspaper.
Postcard campaign begins: We kicked off the campaign by getting written postcards at the Ways and Means hearing last week. Now we need to send out the electronic version. Following is a link to the Stand Website (copy and paste in your browser) and draft an electronic postcard to your representative. Then forward this link to your friends and family in Oregon and ask them to do the same.
Candidates Forum: Tonight at the County Courthouse from 7 to 8 pm. Will be televised also on RVTV channel 9. If you are able to attend and support Paulie, Jeff, and Sally, that would be great. Lynn Howe will be taking our candidate flyers with her.
Medford School Board: Tomorrow (Tuesday) 7 pm at South Medford High cafeteria. I checked the agenda on line, and there is some really eye opening information on the enrollment drop in the past 5 years. I have also heard a rumor (unsubstantiated with the District) that closing a school may be under consideration if the budget deteriorates further following the May 15th forecast.
Panel on Obama's First 100 Days: This Thursday, May 7 at 6:30 pm at the OEA Building (2495 South Pacific Highway). Our Stand organizer Abi Kurfmann will be speaking about education reform ideas from the Obama administration as part of a panel discussion, and then drilling down to the need for reform in Oregon.
Medford Budget Committee: Next Tuesday May 12, at Washington Elementary Cafeteria at 6:30 pm.
This is a very important meeting. It is the first time the MSD will be releasing their budget proposal, and we will know exactly where they propose the cuts be made. If we are to have any impact testifying at the ONE and ONLY budget hearing on May 26th, we must first understand their budget proposal. I cannot stress how important it is for members who are part of the MSD to attend this meeting.
