Cost-effective investments in teachers and kids are on the chopping block. Two critical investments that save taxpayer money and help students succeed are slated for big cuts in the proposed 2009-11 budget. Contact your legislator today.

Supporting new teachers with rigorous mentoring cuts costly turn-over and boosts student achievement - yet this cost-effective program faces a 75% cut.

For every dollar spent on quality pre-school, $7 is saved in social service and criminal justice spending. Despite this enormous return on investment, 670 at-risk children won't be able to attend Head Start if the current budget goes through as written.

Take action today to protect funding for these cost-savings investments!

Mentors for new teachers & principals
With an investment of only $5 million for the 2008-09 school year, the New Teacher and Administrative Mentor Program served 75,000 students by providing nearly 1,000 new teachers and principals with a carefully selected and trained mentor. How teachers do in the first few years is generally how they'll perform throughout their career, so this investment will help countless students over the years.

But with the struggling economy, the legislature has proposed a 75% cut in this program despite its proven ability to improve student achievement and reduce the $45 million a year we currently spend on teacher turn-over. Learn more about this cost-effective investment and then email your legislator- ask them to protect their investment in the mentor program.

Quality preschool
In 2007, Oregon invested wisely in early education. To avoid greater costs down the road, the legislature needs to maintain these investments. Oregon Pre-K faces a 10% cut which will force 670 low-income children out of this proven program. Learn more and take action to reduce cuts to Head Start and press for a $1 million investment in Early Head Start today!
