Former Democratic National Committee Chair Terry McAuliffe is demanding his party take a stand on health care legislation that the president and many others aren't willing to take: Pass a bill with a public option for insurance coverage or don't pass anything at all.
The long-time adviser to the Clintons, striking an atypically progressive tone, urged the White House to get more assertive in its handling of health care reform and described a bill without a public plan as a "failure."
"If we don't have the public option, we are wasting our time," McAuliffe told the Huffington Post. "To chalk something up and get something that is not the right thing to do is morally wrong... To pass something just so you can go home and go into election saying we passed something is not why lawmakers are sent to Washington."...
...Indeed McAuliffe's insistence on a public option is driven by his experiences both in politics and business. He argues that it is an economic imperative to help alleviate the health care costs that are burdening companies and families. And he derides Republicans for using the same playbook they did during the Clinton years -- drawing the debate into sideshow topics like death panels and tax hikes.
"I think for a lot of [Republicans], they could care less," McAuliffe said, when asked if the White House was wasting its time trying to recruit bipartisan support. "They aren't interested in reforming health care. Their interest is bringing the Obama administration down. That is clear. Many of them have publicly said that."

'Donuts to Doors' Event on Aug 22nd, in Support of Obama Health Reform Plan. had a great turnout for canvassing and phone banking Medford, OR: Over thirty volunteers gathered in Medford Saturday morning to support President Obama's Health Care Plan. The 'Donuts to Doors'”event was sponsored by Jackson County Democrats, Oregon Action and Health Care for America NOW.
Some had questions about costs and socializing the health care system. Volunteers, armed with facts, were able to initiate positive dialogs with the majority of those they met.
The group's next step on September 3 will be a Big Push to pass proposed legislation. At that time, they will push wheel barrows filled with the support statements collected today, starting from Senator Jeff Merkley's office and continuing through downtown Medford to Senator Ron Wyden's office. For further information, call Rich Rohde, Oregon Action, or Steve Neuberger, Health Care For America Now! at 772-4029. ___ Note: We had approximately 80 people attending the 'Donuts to Doors' event in Ashland (at the Rogue Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship) as well as the approximately 30 people at the event in Medford (at the JCDemocrats HQ Office). |

Become a Precinct Committeeperson (PCP) - WE NEED YOU!!
The 2008 general election and the election of President Barack Obama energized more people and drew them to our Democratic Party, more than any election in memory. President Obama won here in Jackson County where Republicans outnumber Democrats.
The question now becomes: How do we build on that success and turn Jackson County "blue"? My answer is: By getting more Democrats to become PCPs and working together to make it happen.

How you can become a PCP: If you would like to become a PCP and help our party grow, just call the Jackson County Democratic Headquarters at 878-1050 and tell the office volunteer or the answering machine that you are interested in becoming a precinct committee person. We'll have someone phone you back very soon. Alternatively, you can email me, Allen Hallmark, at vicechair@jcdemocrats.org.
