NLP: What you may need to know about Betsy Johnson
You will likely be asked about Betsy Johnson. She is running for governor as a NAV (non-affiliated voter). She is a former member of the Democratic Party who has won several terms as a state representative and state senator serving Tillamook, Seaside, and Astoria areas. Find out more from her Wikipedia entry.
Johnson is kind of like the Joe Manchin of the Oregon Democratic Party. She has voted with Republicans on business issues, cap-and-trade, and guns. She has supported the Timber Unity movement. She has no qualms about accepting large corporate contributions. Nike’s Phil Knight and Lithia’s Alan Deboer are big financial supporters.
It's too soon to know which party she will impact most in November, but judging from her endorsements by Democrats as well as Republicans (see her website), she will be a major force and could very well make the difference this fall. It’s not clear if she can win against the major parties. But it’s not hard to imagine that because of her, we could see the first Republican victory since the 1990s. Stay tuned.
